The Crown Heights Youth Collective

THE CROWN HEIGHTS YOUTH COLLECTIVE, INC.
is a multidimensional, self development program located in Central Brooklyn. Since its inception in 1978, over 70,000 residents have benefitted from its educational, cultural, social programs and the Rights of Passage project. We established many Peace Zones throughout the borough, the community beautification gardens, development of agricultural gardens, feeding of the community and beautification through murals instead of graffiti.
The agency’s co-founders Dr. Robert H. Johnson, Ms. Myrah E. Brown Green and Mr. Richard E. Green perceived the need for advocacy and service oriented organization to stem the tide of urban decay. Its trust are toward a renewed excellence and the establishment of community progress.

Mission Statement

The Crown Heights Youth Collective (CHYC) serves the diverse African and Hasidic communities of Crown Heights. Because of the rampant crime and truancy within the Crown Heights community; there was a need for a comprehensive youth program. During the past16 years CHYC has served more than 60,000 young people through youth outreach. With our unique hands-on approach, we meet the youth wherever they are; whether it is the playground, schoolroom, or street corner. By initiating youth outreach programs, the Crown Heights Youth Collective is encouraging young people to re-focus. From this newly created vintage point, young people see themselves and their community as worth of saving. They no longer wait for some outside force, but are taking an active part in preserving and enhancing their neighborhood. Although we continue to target youths aged 3-22 years old, our services are also available to the community-at-large.
Our Youth outreach is multi-dimensional, we do not perform one function but must bend and twist to fit whatever the particular need is at the time. With compassion and encouragement we function as a bridge, in order to fulfill our mission which is life-saving and life-sustaining. Besides the traditional forms of youth outreach such as drug prevention, crisis counseling, career and educational guidance; we have also established our own school. The Collective, Fellowship & Peace Academy and initiated cross cultural exchanges through “Project C.U.R.E..” A revered fostering of relationships with all segments of the community reaching our Hasidic Lubauctcher neighbors. As a youth oriented organization, we live a duality of a prevention of ills and projection of strengths. From our “Peace Academy” to after school tutorials, the Crown Heights Youth Collective is committed to furthering the spiritual and educational growth of the community we serve. After young people are induced in off the street; we engage them intellectually and psychologically.
Our Youth outreach is multi-dimensional, we do not perform one function but must bend and twist to fit whatever the particular need is at the time. With compassion and encouragement we function as a bridge between the worlds of despair and hope
